Special child-rearing allowance

1.Purpose

To promote the welfare of children with physical or psychological illness by providing allowances.

2.Eligible persons

Guardians who are taking care of children younger than 20 years of age, with physical or psychological illness, at home.

3.Allowance

1st grade 51,100 Japanese Yen/month

2nd grade 34,030 Japanese Yen/month

4.Date of payment

The total allowance of the last four months are paid, annually, in April, August, and December.

5.Income limit

If the income of the recipient or his/her spouse and the support obligee are over the limit, the allowance is not provided. See the table found at

6.Application procedure

Applications should be submitted to the local government of the patient’s residence.

To promote the welfare of disabled children and reduce their mental strain and physical burden by providing an allowance to severely ill children.

2.Eligible persons

Children younger than 20 years of age who need daily support at home because of their severe mental or physical illness.

3.Allowance

14,480 Japanese Yen/month

4.Date of payment

The total allowance of the last three months are paid, annually, in February, May, August, and November,

6.Application procedure

If patients recover from their illness, they are not eligible for the support.


Expense except for medical fees

Some costs related to health care, such as transportation expenses, can be applied to medical expense deductions on the final tax return.Consult the taxation office for more information.

Core hospitals for childhood cancer care

Fifteen hospitals are chosen as core hospitals for childhood cancer care by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The consultation centers of these hospitals provide information on childhood cancer.
